Sherborne Interplay
Sherborne Samenspel is a body-oriented play form for parent and child aimed at strengthening self-confidence and the secure relationship.
Sherborne Samenspel can be used to restore a sense of security whenever a child has had adverse experiences. When there is a lack of basic security a child cannot develop properly. This can be the case with attachment problems or after trauma. With movement and bodyawareness excercises we promote the parent’s sensitive responsiveness to the child’s signals. We want the child to be able to surrender to the caring and guiding parent.
Sometimes a child has had too little opportunity in the first years of life to gain positive physical learning experiences. Through Sherborne Samenspel, the child can still be given the opportunity to feel supported and cherished by important adults, and to rely on them, but also to develop and dare to use their own strength, in a healthy way. Due to this overflow of positive physical experiences, that part of the development that the child has missed is compensated as much as possible.
With this treatment it is assumed that it is possible to (partially) restore a disturbed attachment development.
Positive experiences are placed next to the previous experiences. The strength of the method lies partly in the fact that video is used as an aid. The video images of the sessions are reviewed and analyzed together with the parents. Parents’ sensitive responsiveness is enhanced as they become more aware of their natural ability to understand their child’s body language. Parents thus become co-therapists, who can continue to work with the forms of movement at home.
